About Me and my hobby

It all started in the 1970s, I guess, and I’m sure my wargaming background is not unusual. At first it was Airfix plastic figures, then moving on to some metal figures from manufacturers such as Minifigs, Hinchliffe and the like. I wargamed with my brother, Steve, mostly playing WRG 5th/ 6th Edition ancients. I also had a penchant for the books of Charles Grant (“The Wargame”) and Brigadier Peter Young (“Charge”)… and the gaming they embarked upon filled me with a drive to do similar myself, something which I have been able to resurrect in recent times and to which a section of this site is devoted.
In 1990, when I left the Royal Navy, having had a few years away from wargaming (although I still attended the odd show, and regularly read the various hobby magazines), I returned to the hobby. Soon afterwards, in 1993, I founded the League of Augsburg group (a rather grand title for what amounted to only two, sometimes three, of us!). When I coined the name, little did I realise what was to follow, and during the next 12 years I thoroughly enjoyed running many award-winning demonstration games, and featuring in the wargames magazines with a wide variety of articles and pictures.

There are so many people within the hobby of wargaming to whom I am grateful for their inspiration over the years. Not least my fellow League of Augsburgers. And there are so many others who have flown the banner for our hobby over many years and whose influences can be seen throughout the site.
Thanks are also due to my wife, Elizabeth, who not only "understands", but also took most of the photos on the site!
